A lot of fiction has been written about European colonization in #africa And then along comes #naipaulThis book feels like a grandiose family saga in under 300 pages. It follows the trepidations and whatnots of #salim a #muslim #eastafrican of #indian heritage. As a mirror of the horrors and tragedies around him, Salim fails to create and follow his own dreams. He’s at the mercy of some powerful external forces. Some he can’t control. Others seem to come from his own failure. Does he manage to get out?… Another great theme here is the vivid presence of #multicultural #global Africa. We get to see and feel different communities and individuals intertwined and conflicted and in between different identities and worlds. #indian#abendintheriver #vsnaipaul #zaire #congo#london @vintageanchorbooks#trinidadandtobago #uganda #kisangani#migration #gujarati #colonial
