An Ermine in Czernopol by Gregor von Rezzori

#vonrezzori is an acquired taste. If you like #doblin or #zweig then you’d like this book. #rezzori takes all the #austrohungarian usual characters you’d expect to see in #vienna and transport them into the provincial #czernopol #bukovina , the author’s homeland. Each chapters tells the story of a larger than life character in a peculiar story which belongs to the author’s nostalgia of a world long gone by. The embellished and at times bizarre stories, full of grandiloquent twists, are highly entertaining indeed. However, I couldn’t help to think that after multiple stories every chapter felt like a short story standing alone with a more or less repetitive formula. It’s still worth a read for those of you interested in a corner of Europe and #ukraine so coveted by many empires and the people who had to endure it all. #recommended #anermineinczernopol #gregorvonrezzori #nyrb #ukrainethroughbooks #centraleuropean #chernivtsi #hermelinintschernopol #philipboehm
