The best non-fiction #academic book I have read so far for #gendequeerlit ! Where should I start? I think the most impressive and refreshing aspect here is how much #sharyngrahamdavies never loses sight of her study group as much as herself throughout the entire book. #challenginggendernorms is both a pleasure to read and and #educationalexperience. Through reflections, interviews and observations, #daviesdescribes a fascinating, complex and human tale of #calalai #calabai and #bissu within the #bugis or #buginesesociety in southern #sulawesi#indonesia . What I found also most interesting is how Davies talks about a spectrum of “transgendering” to help us visualize the different genders. Also similar to other reads I’ve done before, Davies explains how the role of a #shaman called bissu in Buginese has some similarities to #intersex and #transgender but at the same time there should a warning not to transpose pre-conceived Western terms which do not reflect the complexity and richness of other cultures. Lastly Davies also heavily discusses the role of #weddings in defining and assigning gender roles to people and the central role it plays on socializing genders. I honestly can’t recommend this tiny book enough. I learned SO much and I’m so impressed by both her erudite and humble demeanor. #highlyrecommended#casestudiesinculturalanthropology#culturalanthropology#wadsworthcengagelearning#genderqueerlit #sengkang#makassar
