Corregidora by Gail Jones

Book set in Lexington, United States. Reviewed on 2020/09: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFekkfKAcns/

Sometimes when I’m reading a book, other books pop up in my mind. When reading #corregidora by #gayljones , I immediately thought of Melanctha in #threelives by #gertrudestein and #theireyeswerewatchinggod by #zoranealehurston . Even more so, Corregidora seems to be in direct communion with #lovingher by #annallenshockley . I’m going to let smarter people do some extensive study on the parallels. I will tell you here my brief thoughts. Both #jones and #schokley were born in #kentucky , #lexington and #louisville respectively and their stories reflect #blacklives in these cities. Both write about the intricacies of generational #trauma and even more importantly of #resilience . When both books were published back in the 1970s, the writers became pioneers in #africanamericanliterature written by #blackwomen , from their perspectives and reflecting their lives. I think the setting is really important here. These books speak about black stories in the #bluegrassstate particularly in cities in the border of the US #midwest . The rural/urban divide is more accentuated in Corregidora between #bracktown and Lexington. But the main questions are almost the same: What spaces do we occupy or belong to? Have we historically occupied them? Do other people think we have a right to occupy them? How do we ultimately define #belonging and our relationship to a space? Is belonging just a constant battle and compromise? #highlyrecommended #blackwomenwriters #beaconpress
