The next four books reminded me of the reason why I love reading from the perspective of where the story takes place. From 1918’s independent and democratic #baku , 1930’s #soviet #poltoratsk or #ashgabat , 1990’s independent #dushanbe and back to 1939’s #kabul . Let’s begin the dance! #daysinthecaucasus by #banine is probably one of the best #memoirs I’ve ever read. It’s charming, compelling, debonair and deeply human. Banine managed to retell her most horrible and traumatic moments in her life, from her childhood to her escape to #france , and still makes us love and hope together with her. I think the key here is the writing: honest yet pristine, sharp yet embellished. All the different characters dance around her and also become vividly attached to the story she is trying to convey. Banine is such a compelling writer that this book felt more #historicalfiction than #autobiography . Couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end! Thanks, @pushkin_press for yet another great story! #highlyrecommended#azeriliterature #pushkinpress#comingofage #bakı #bakou #бакы#jourscaucasiens
