This is without a doubt a formative book. And what’s taking shape here is the modern #identity of the #filipino against all odds and more specifically against the #spanish and #american imperialist urges. Through the sophisticated prose of #fsioniljose we quickly learn that the different communities and their different languages do not allow them to find common ground and fight back. The #ilustrados insist on one thing and one thing only: #patriotism Well I personally despise patriotism regardless of the country or group. It only breeds mediocrity, censorship and dictatorship. There are definitely some great instances here when the main character finally begins to question what it has been handed on to him: #catholic precepts, Spanish superiority and the corrupt new elites of #mestizos I was obviously expecting more of that individual quest for dissent and critical thinking.
