#efuru by #floranwapa which was published in 1966, reminded me of #buchiemecheta #amaataaidoo and #zoranealehurston . There is an immediate need to place Efuru in its historical and cultural context: 1960s #nigeria specifically the #igbo cultures of the #nigerdelta . Both in the metaphorical and literal sense of the story, the book feels like the missing piece in a larger puzzle. #nwapa ‘s visionary and groundbreaking text must be seen as a foundational stone for some many other #womenwriters from Africa to tell their own stories without a need to belong to a particular political agenda. Efuru’s life might seem simple to some or inspirational to others. Regardless, this is the story as Nwapa wanted to tell it to the world. Despite life’s seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Efuru has a perennial willingness and hope to face the world and demand what is rightfully #hers . #nigerianliterature #agbor #africanwritersseries #recommended #igboland #polygamy #sacrifice #igbotraditions
