Book set in Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe. Reviewed on 2019/10: https://www.instagram.com/p/B37QnyylJNN/
I was and still am conflicted about this book. What begins with a promising premise and interesting story devolves into a labyrinth from which you never find your way out, and also where you might just die of boredom. #miguelsousatavares spends 7, 10 and sometimes even more pages describing landscapes, architecture, objects in general, and leaves the reader wishing he would stop at some point. I’d say that descriptions occupy at least 80% of the text. To be honest, the rest dedicated to the actual story does not hold this book together. This brief action part felt pointless, predictable and at times repetitive. Finding books set in #saotomeandprincipe in English is a struggle and I believe this book benefits from the lack of better or any options whatsoever. I wish I could find a book written by a #saotomeanwriter or at least just a different option from this one. If you know of any, please do let me know. In the meantime, I guess #sousatavaresmight be the best we have… #saotomeeprincipe#Sãotoméepríncipe#Sãotoméandpríncipe#portuguesecolony #equador#equator #historicalfiction #slavery#internationalintrigue#portugueseliterature #saotome#Sãotomé #angola #slavetrade#britishcolonialism#bloomsburypaperbacks
