At first #esperanzastreetmay seem as just another book about rapid changes and #upheaval in a #rural and left behind community. However there are at least more than a 100 pages at the beginning of detailed and painstaking description of all the distinctive characters living in this coastal town. I think #kenidoes a splendid job at constructing each of these peculiar characters to an extent that you get attached to them and start seeing them for what they are: an extended #family with their own problems and joys. However for the rest of the book, I’m afraid I did not care much for it. It’s a great summer or Sunday read but not more than that. I wished she had spent even more time describing the characters and how they viewed each other as opposed to creating a plot which felt more melodramatic than sophisticated to me. #niyatikeni #filipino #filipinoliterature#puerto #manila #maynila #mindanao#comingofage #community #gentrification#philippines #adulthood #spanishcolonial#porttown #tagalog
