I threw myself on this one without knowing much about #tanzanianliterature and it was all worth it. Because #gurnah portrays a #muslim family living in #zanzibar it highlights a #Swahilispeaking and #eastafrican community which the readers might not be so aware of. Also you get a glance here into the short lived history of the #peoplesrepublicofzanzibar and its subsequent union with #tanganyika to create the modern state of #tanzania At an even more transcendental level, it’s a #comingofage story. It’s all about that day when you realize your parents are as stupid and imperfect if not more than you are. #salim travels around the world, experiences it all and still is riddled with questions and inevitable failures. It’s not until one day much later on when he comes to the realization of his parents’ human faults and weaknesses that it all starts to make sense. Once that takes place, he and the book manage to become quite the ride. #gravelheart #abdulrazakgurnah#zanzibarcity #unguja #london#familyissues #comingback#startingalloveragain #bloomsbury
