#theguest
by #hwangsokyong is very different from all the #koreanlit I’ve ever read. #hwang wanted to portray a #korean forced to be a #guest a foreigner in their own land. Hwang explores two types of being a guest: a guest, a minority in a group in a society, or you can be a guest onto yourself, within you almost like a parasite. He explores both at the same time with phantasmagorical and historical elements. I still don’t know whether I liked it or not. I did learn a lot about Korean and specifically #northkorean history and the influence of Christianity in the peninsula. I feel like this is the kind of book I’m going to have to sit with and let it marinate for a while. #recommended#kyungjachun#mayawest#sevenstoriespress#japaneseoccupation#황석영#haeju#해주시는#koreanchristians
