A lot of people ask me how I manage to find not just books but great stories from different countries. Relying on a few amazing publishers such as #dalkeyarchive is one of my favorite techniques. If I’m looking for #slovenianliterature and they have 3 books by #jančar chances are that it’s going to be something. And #isawherthatnight did not disappoint at all. Having one character developing a #monologue per chapter is not a groundbreaking technique. However #jancar writes so perfectly that you even know who’s speaking even before anything specific comes along. The character speaking constantly describes the ups and downs of other characters as well. So it all feels like a dialogue of #monologues more than completely isolated ones. Also there are some earth shattering and powerful scenes describing the sheer brutality and inhumanity of Slovenians against same Slovenians. This is not something I had read on other books aiming at some soul searching after the tragic history of the entire region. #highlyrecommended#dragojancar #dragojančar #ljubljana#maribor #yugoslavia #trieste #zagreb#podgorska #strongwomen #balkans#traitor #noprotection
