At the end of the day #augustengelhardt was a real person. Our #nudist #excentric #coconut lover and reclusive main character here was a real person who lived in the #kabakon island in #germannewguinea at the beginning of the 20th century. This fact does not by any chance diminishes the absurd, amusing and fantastic tale. A lot of reviews compare it to #josephconrad . Personally it reminded me more of #baum ‘s #grandhotel or even #doblin‘s #berlinalexanderplatz . #kracht places the action in the #germancolonies in the Pacific before WWI and mixes both German sociopolitical drama with cultural traditions of #papuans . In my opinion the best part of the book is his writing style. #christiankracht feels irreverent, sarcastic and whimsical when describing the inevitable demise of his #quixotic character. Elegant and intricate prose takes center stage to describe the fragility to aim for your dreams at all costs while trying to ignore the world’s horrible face. #recommended #papuanewguinea#bismarckarchipelago #kokopo#herbertshöhe
