Jazz, perfume and the incident by Seno Gumira Ajidarma

Book set in Dili, East Timor. Reviewed on 2020/11: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHqLCJ9Aizg/

Very difficult to judge #jazzperfumeandtheincident in an IG post. But here we go! There is the #diliincident , then #indonesian#censorship , then #senogumiraajidarma ‘s writing style and finally the three seemingly disparate stories here. Putting all of this together should entice most readers to give #seno a chance if you’ve never heard of him before. I was personally grateful for the translator’s notes (#gregoryharris ) in this #lontar edition. It helped me be mindful and prepared to some extent to what I was about to read. Regardless of the preparation, this book is not an easy read at all. The author’s constraints and his innate ability to create clarity in highly crafted confusion is quite the skill. It elevates this book greatly. However you need to keep that in mind because otherwise you’ll have in your hands the pieces of a puzzle which might not make much sense at first. The disjointed parts in the “story” serve an ulterior purpose to let the truth speak for itself through literature. #highlyrecommended#indonesianliterature#jazzparfumdaninsiden#timorleste#easttimor#dili#jakarta#modernlibraryofindonesia#journalism#sastrakoran#newspaperliterature
