I love when books come into my radar because they were mentioned in other books or they inspired numerous writers for generations and until this day. That is definitely the case with #landwithoutthunder by #graceogot . The #shortstories in this book all speak to seemingly mundane and daily #scenes in #luo communities in both #kenya and #tanzania by #lakevictoria . #ogot takes the reader’s interest not only into the heart of the community’s culture and traditions. She also reveals the hidden details that that same culture might have preferred to ignore, and certainly not have discussed so openly in a book. Writing in the 1960s and in the midst of her country’s independence, Ogot wanted to talk about everything that was affecting her people. She wanted to become their voice. Given the constraints she had in order to talk so transparently, she then decided to create her stories full of #macabre and #nightmarish characters and twists. Personally, I felt this #collection had it all: funny, #scary and #socialparodystories. Facing great adversity, Ogot still found a way to tell her story in subtle yet powerful and fantastic ways. #recommended #kenyanliterature#kisumu #asembo#eastafricanpublishinghouse #butere#fantastic #nightmare
