#maiba was tender and brutal all at the same time and with every other level in between. I was expecting more of a #comingofage story and you do get that to some extent. But this book is mostly about the erosion of traditions and rapid changes. You don’t have to know much about #papuanewguinea , the #anuki language or the the people from #milneybayday to let the story transport you to the heart of it all: the young Maiba. #russellsoaba created a very complete character which I think it’s the best part of this book. Through her doubting, all-questioning and impetuous mind, we get to learn about the challenges and choices the #makawana village needs to confront. Who will lead? Where are they heading?
