#manaschi is #ismailov ‘s attempt to create his own modern epic in the style of the historical #manas itself. I think only time will tell whether #hamidismailov succeeded. If you’re interested in reading fiction set in #centralasia , the historical #turkestan region, you need Ismailov. I’ve read read his stories set in #tashkent , #uzbekistan , #kazakhstan and now this one in his native #kyrgyzstan , countries where his books remain #banned to this day. Much like his personal life, characters in Manaschi share identities, chosen or imposed which define themselves and their environment. External forces in the story feed on internal conflicts and define us versus others in multiple ways. However, the #epicofmanas through #bekesh , the Manaschi par excellence is here to tell us that the more things change, the more they remain the same.
