“I remember. I remember Mema. Mother. My mother. My mother was a strong woman. I remember her. I remember everything. I remember her words, her story, her life, her pains, her tribulations and joys. I remember everything as if it happened yesterday.” #danielmengarawrote an ode to his mother: #mema . Using vanishing #memories and fading thoughts, he remembers perfectly. That contradiction goes to core of what I loved in this tiny book. #mengara not only allows us to read the complicated tale of such a complete character. He also depicts her from his imperfect memory and he’s brutally honest about it. The writing style and the different trains of thoughts allow us to realize that although memories are never perfect, they are all we have to tell the story. In Mema we have the firsthand memories and the nostalgia and emotions they make us feel, and how those same feelings fade through time whether we want it or not. #highlyrecommended #gabon#gaboneseliterature#africanwritersseries #heinemann#heinemannbooks #medzo #mother#ngabon #fang #fangculture#againstallodds #gabonese#remembering #mymotherandi
