Reading #duongthuhuong for the first time last year was one of the best discoveries of 2019. However, I’m sad to say that #memoriesofapurespring felt underwhelming and disconnected. In my opinion, there are way too many jumps from one story to another or from one era to another. I lost track of what was going on from the very beginning. Even when I felt I was getting the hang of it, somehow another plot from another time or some internal monologue would come in to derail everything. It’s all a shame because she is a #mustreadauthor and her #paradiseoftheblind is quite the story. Some people blame the translation for the bad reception of this book. I don’t speak #vietnamese so it’s impossible for me to judge on that end. I’ll tell you this. If you are indeed interested in #vietnameseliterature , please do give #duong a chance. Her books have been banned in #vietnam and at some point she was also incarcerated. My recommendation is however to skip this book for now and read her other ones. #nextplease #allovertheplace #bannedbooks #hanoi #quangngai #multipleeras #multiplevoices #communistvietnam #lovestory
