Mothballs by Alia Mamdouh

Book set in Baghdad, Iraq. Reviewed on 2020/09: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFCXlk6AQbi/

After reading #lagarconne earlier this year, I knew I had to read more books by #aliamamdouh . #mothballs is definitely my kind of book. It feels like a collection of seemingly mundane #vignettes aiming to describe a #nostalgic time we never want to forget. However, the more you read the vignettes, the more you realize the traumatic and powerful actions moving the story along. The mundane #memories engraved in #huda are so vivid and atmospheric that ultimately engulf and transport you to 1940s #baghdad . This subtle yet intoxicating style is what makes #mamdouh an outstanding storyteller. The chapters are text-based pictures of a bygone era which when put together tell a compelling story. #bestbookofthemonth ? We’ll see! #highlyrecommended #arabwomenwriters #iraqiliterature #garnett #petertheroux #fadiafaqir #بغداد #عالية_ممدوح
