#muslimyouth by #coletteharris in a lot of surprising ways compliment the book I posted before. Edgar talks about #soviet#nationbuilding particularly in #turkmenistan and all of #CentralAsia . Then here #harris offers the reader a view into the consequences of that nation building in the Central Asia of the 1990s post independence and particularly in #dushanbe #tajikistan . Harris’ intention in her book is to observe and to compare her observations to her previous visits to the country. One thing I really appreciated in this book is her awareness of her always biased observations as a white western woman. This awareness does not prevent her from doing an outstanding #anthropological work. Quite the contrary! I’d argue that it’s literally her self-awareness and honesty that allows her to see patterns and connections where others have failed.
