Book set in Pohnpei, Micronesia. Reviewed on 2020/08: https://www.instagram.com/p/CDeaEmKgfYi/
Here’s my first book set in #micronesia ! #myurohs by #emelihterkihleng speaks of the island of #pohnpei and its culture specifically. #kihleng comes highly praised by two of my all-time favorite #oceanianwriters: #albertwendt and #siafigiel . So I knew I had to read her. My Urohs is a #collection of #poetry focusing on the author’s reflections on returning, dislocation, belonging and identity. Linking them to a larger #pacificliterature , Kihleng delves her #poems on as much #pohnpeianculture and language as possible. She does add footnotes with the translations. However, I invite the readers to read the entire poem without looking at or understanding the exact meaning of the Pohnpeian words. Their sudden “intrusion”, contrast with English words and seemingly lack of belonging exemplify some of the compelling messages in this tiny yet deep book. #highlyrecommended#micronesianliterature#pohnpeianliterature#kahuaomanoapress #readoceania
