I’m not going to lie, this book took me a few chapters to get into. Although I hadn’t seen the movie, I already knew that #oncewerewarriors was going to be visceral and raw. I guess I just didn’t know to what extent. #alanduff does not waste time to beat you up since the first pages. The words are basically one punch of burning feelings after another punch of vehement emotions. It’s simply #nonstop and made even more virulent thanks to a rich use of slang and oral poetry. There is such much violence, so much unrelenting pain, and so many uncontrollable events that perhaps #poetry seems the only way to describe it all, perhaps the only way out. This book is certainly not for the faint-hearted and I don’t recommend to drink and read here. However if you do give it a chance, you won’t be disappointed in the least. How can you possibly find any poetic way out when this #gutwrenching world seems obsessed to see you fall over and over again? Is it really the way out you should be looking for or just for a way to survive? #highlyrecommended#newzealandliterature #vintage #twolakes#maori #rotorua #borstal #duff #maorifamily#kiwiliterature #readoceania #hekes#debutnovel #madeintoamovie#autobiographical
