Despite all his introductory claims to the contrary, #hoogbergen can’t escape his academic and historian inclinations, not even when tasked to write down #oralstories . Having said that, I still think he certainly tried his best to “match” as much as possible the “official” record on #marrons in the #dutcharchives and the stories of the descendants he personally met. My wish was that he had to stop trying so hard to match these obviously irreconcilable accounts, and concentrate and reveal in its differences. Hoogbergen in his academic bubble will never dare to do such a thing. Personally I’d recommend only the chapters here when he describes the #oralhistory accounts he is invited to experience.
