What you need to remember is that literature is never only about the books. #queer by #williamsburroughs is about #burroughs himself, his persona, the #beatgeneration , #joanvollmer , #americanexpats , #homosexuality in the US in the 1950s and so much more. To me, Queer is about #obsession . It reminded me right away of Stefan Zweig’s Confusion and Yukio Mishima’s Confessions of a Mask. #obsessions allow us to see how important, whether we like it or not, are other people’s opinions of us. Obsessions are created when who we claim to be, what or whom we love is frowned upon by those around us. I know these three literary examples have all featured #homosexual characters because of how historically pernicious and vicious the hate, abuse and repression towards same-sex attraction has been present and continues to be in most societies. However obsessions can sprout and contaminate pretty much anything, and specially when society allows certain individuals to exploit the obsessions of others. Society rewards only those who have managed not only to repress their own obsessions, but also those who can bully the weakest among all of us obsessed. #recommended #mexicocity #penguinbooks #sequel #quest #junkie #df #addiction #williamburroughs
