I loved this book for mostly two reasons. First because it confirmed my love for #taharbenjellounwhose one of his books I reviewed yesterday. #jarrodhayes gives #benjelloun a prominent place in how #maghrebine authors have imagined and written about #postcolonial identit(ies)y which also includes #gender diversity and expression. #hayes also uses his texts to dismantle the West’s dominance on what’s “post-colonialist” or not and at the same time to destabilize our conception of the other. I was already aware of the great works of #albertmemmi , #assiadjebar and #mohammeddib also featured here. And now thanks to this book I discovered #katebyacine , #tahardjaout and #leilasebbar whom I’d like to read soon. All these texts together are, in Hayes’s argument not only shedding light on marginalized #sexualities in the #Maghreb , they also contribute to #queer us the West and the way we talk and interact with these countries: #morocco #algeria and #tunisia . Overall this was a fascinating read and literary voyage into identities and sexualities connecting past struggles with future hopes all through books. I wonder how including #ninabouraoui and #abdellahtaïa would have added even more interesting angles to discuss. Well maybe a #queernations part deux. #recommended #genderqueerlit#queermaghreb #queermorocco#queeralgeria #queertunisia#universityofchicagopress
