Regardless of what the title might lead you to believe, the #seasonofthejew has nothing to do with anything Jewish whatsoever. #shadboltsigns here a #historical #semifictional story about some battles part of the infamous #maoriwars and some real characters that took place in the action at the end of the 19th century. From what I read, his main character #fairweather is the one he took more liberties with and that’s very telling. From all the other ones, Fairweather is the only one who refuses to fall into the main black and white doctrines everyone else is following: religion, patriotism and the colony. His #sarcasm wit and individualism makes him very modern compared to the rest. Perhaps this was Shadbolt’s attempt to “place” us in the story ourselves. Because for 2017, it’s a difficult and important thing to remember how #violent and bloody #newzealand used to be. Maybe it’s equally important to think of what human cost it took to “pacify” and colonize the region at all costs… #mauriceshadbolt #patutahi#povertybay #ngatapa #wellington#auckland #teurewera#newzealandliterature #colonialism#britishcolony #maori
