The most interesting part of #servethepeople is the context. If you take that out, the story itself remains witty but nothing out of the ordinary. So the setting is definitely what you should keep in mind while reading this book: #chinaduring the 60s at the height of #chairmanmao ‘s #culturalrevolution . The #historical background makes this witty story into an enticing and absurd #darkcomedy and social #parody . Obviously #yanlianke was censored immediately after publishing this book and others he published later on. Having read his later works, I do have to say that his #satirical and clever observations here excel even more masterfully in his following books. So personally I took this book as a way of understanding how his writing developed. Although overall this is still a highly entertaining read, it’s only the beginning of his great potential. #recommended #chineseliterature #beijing#为人民服务 #阎连科 #北京市 #censored#sexcomedy #文化大革命 #grovepress#grovepressblackcat
