I was very resolute in finding a book set on the island of #socotra and this is the only one I was able to find. Although to be honest, #radwaashour does not specifically mention #soqotra in this #arabtale . So why does it appear to take place on the island? #siraaj talks about an #island which it’s both mythical and off the coast of #yemen where Arabs and Africans live and mingle. Much more than a specific geographical location, I think #ashour stemming from her #egyptian identity, wanted to place the desire and power of an #arab and #african unity center-stage. This is a tiny novel of deep allegories and non-sequential drama. Africans and Arabs do much more than live and mingle on this island. They also fight and dream and survive. Her writing style is sophisticated and whimsical and it doesn’t care much for linear plots or fleshed out characters. Siraaj feels like a dream or a nightmare or perhaps even a little bit of both depending on who decides to tell the story. #recommended#egyptianliterature#ModernMiddleEastLiteratureinTranslationSeries#CenterforMiddleEasternStudies#UniversityofTexasatAustin#universityoftexaspress #سُقُطْرَى#Guardafui #رضوى_عاشور#islandstories
