If I remember correctly #talismano is the only #tunisian book available on #dalkeyarchivepress catalog. So of course I bought it because I first and foremost want to support more and more #middleeastern #arab and #africanliterature in this country. However this book is not for the faint-hearted. I hope at some point someone comes with the annotated version because you might need a reference book to “get” this book. #abdelwahabmeddeb has without a doubt an #encyclopedic knowledge on a wealth of varied linguistic #cultural historical #geographical issues that at times you need to wonder how many PhDs you need before delving into this text. Another layer here gets in the middle of it all: #médinerto #medinate Meddeb coins this term in order to describe his style which he aims to ressemble a #medina an #oldfashionedlabyrinthe of small passages in the seemingly chaotic old #arabcity It’s a work of art but also one you need to drink slowly in order to savor it. So you have two options with this book: either you stop every page and aim at discovering the hidden meanings or enjoy the “medinating” feeling of the slowly unfolding narrative.
