I think #help should also be taught in schools as another subject along with chemistry, history, etc. When to ask for help; to whom; what is more or less appropriate to ask, etc. More importantly: when to give help. #hulme gives us here an ominous and slightly morbid story about those who give help but then end up damaging even more those they were supposed to help in the first place. #thebonepeople is an outstanding example of the #cannibalism of social interactions and the dictatorship of #goodintentions I just hoped she had explored and abused this underlying even more. The end of this book makes you wonder how much editing could have helped here. The #maorimythology was an interesting albeit inconsequential element. Maybe a re arrangement of chapters could have helped to bring that element more in line with the first chapters. Despite the ending, I’m happy to give this haunting and poignant book a #highlyrecommended mention. #kerihulme #newzealandliterature#southisland #aotearoa #abusivepeople#deaf #naufrage #moerangi #adoption#picador #lifeafterdeath #newzealand#bookerprize
