Book set in Lima, Peru. Reviewed on 2019/03: https://www.instagram.com/p/BvWcUo8ngHh/
This book was my very failed attempt at reading a story not set in #lima . I’m starting to think that it’s almost impossible. The #bridge itself in #thebridgeofsanluisrey is supposed to be located somewhere between #cuzco and Lima. However #wilder through his narrator concentrates these 100 pages on what happened to the 5 #aristocrats from the end of the 19th century Lima who tragically died while crossing this same bridge. Don’t worry I have not revealed anything at all. #thorntonwilder himself begins his story almost this exact same sentence. Despite the #historicalfiction framework, Wilder wants to pay attention to our obsession with meaning, seeing and imposing #meaning to a very much meaningless existence. The different stories are intriguing and captivating by themselves. Although I think he forgot or forces the connections between them way too much in my opinion. Overall an interesting and well-written #theatrical text. Not surprising at all given the fact that he was such an accomplished #playwright himself. #recommended #pulitzerprize#americanliterature #perennialclassics#investigation #divineintervention#coincidence #peruvianaristocrats #madrid
