How can I possibly have a #literarytrip of the #mediterranean without featuring either #sephardic writers or characters? So the next 6-7 books will help fill that void… Although I chose #izmir as the location for this book, #thehouseinsmyrna actually takes place in #istanbul #lisbon #riodejaneiro and the historical #smyrna The writer includes so many #memories (her family’s and her own) that at times it becomes a challenge to know exactly where and when the plot is taking place. More or less this is what’s going on: #militaryrepression in #rio where her parents live, #politicalexile in Lisbon where she was born, currently traveling to #turkey and #istanbul the land where her family is from and past scenes from her grandparents in #ottoman Smyrna. Having said all that, I personally think #tatianasalemlevy is purposely and actively trying to confuse the reader. She wants you to feel how fragile pasts tend to be when constructed from memories of people long gone and how longings can come crushing down on you when confronted to reality. Overall an interesting and compelling read. This comes #recommended for sure! #lusophone #achavedecasa
