The life and opinions of Zacharias Lichter by Matei Calinescu

Book set in Bucharest, Romania. Book reviewed on 2020/09: https://www.instagram.com/p/CE6w72BA8dn/

I have only two books set in #bucharest #romania so far in my #bookmap : #fortwothousandyears by #mihailsebastian and now this one. #thelifeandopinionsofzachariaslichter by #mateicălinescu feels like an extension of #sebastian ‘s masterpiece. The similarities between these two reverberate throughout Calinescu’s book. Is #zachariaslichter actually Mihail Sebastian? Regardless, you don’t need to have read Sebastian’s book to be blown away by the powerful text here. #calinescu through Zacharias #lichter propels the readers into a roller coaster of emotions and observations ranging from the most mundane to the ethereal. Lichter has an opinion about everything and he wants you to know: on comfort, metaphysics of laughter, old people and even masks. Each chapter is a plunge into his world, the webs which connect them and where he lives. He does not inhabit our world. He transcended it, looked back and now he gets to judge us. #highlyrecommended #romanianliterature #Călinescu #mateicalinescu #bucharest #nyrb #censored #ViaţaşiopiniileluiZachariasLichter #ViatasiopiniileluiZachariasLichter
