I finally managed to get around finishing #themakiokasisters and I strongly believe that this is now one of my favorite books of all times. A previously #aristocratic family falling to lower class levels and failing to catch on the new social mores portrayed here through the eyes of its 4 sisters. Yukiko and Sachiko seem to take more center stage but each of the sisters represent a different point of view: tradition, compromise, passivity and rebellion. The book is actually called “lightly falling snow” or “light snow falling” in Japanese. I think the notion behind the name is the sense of how things change constantly and inevitably confuse us regardless of what we do or how much we anticipate. The #makioka sisters know that very well each on her own. It’s also a beautifully written book with a casual look into the lives of regular #japanese people in the days before World War II.
