Book set in Baku, Azerbaijan. Reviewed on 2019/08: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0wprrkgMrV/
Gotta be honest here! The only thing I enjoyed in this book was the central role of #sovietazerbaijan especially the #Bakuof the 1970s and 1980s in the story. A city in the periphery of the #sovietempire tries to remain relevant under the oppressing circumstances and at the same time to assume its historical role as a crossroads of so many cultures. Despite all the Soviet/Russian acculturation and occupation, Baku seems restless and defiant to whatever other people want to force her to be. My guess is that #ellaleya saw herself and her main character #leila in the same way. Personally I didn’t care much for the main story here. I kept reading solely because I wanted to discover more and more about #leya‘s descriptions of the city’s life during that area. A more condensed and less predictable storylines would have done wonders to #theorphansky . If anyone knows of other stories taking place anywhere in #azerbaijan , I’m all ears! #sourcebooks#sourcebookslandmark#impossiblelove #sovietspy#sovietunion #bakı #maidentower#qızqalası #баку#settingyourmindfree#liberatingmusic #virtuoso
