#thepearl is a #parable with universal appeal, direct message and its length is just a handful of pages. The setting of #bajacalifornia and #steinbeck ‘s style of intricate prose with ancestral meaning make this text a pleasurable and fast read. Having said that, I felt a little disappointed at the simplicity of the message and its predictable ending. Perhaps the most interesting part is the fact that it was published in the 1940s and how it might have felt groundbreaking at the time for #americanliterature . A well-established and popular American writer writing about poor indigenous people aiming for emancipation and freedom from their greedy ruling classes could be considered far-fetched or a gamble for some. It shows a #johnsteinbeck concerned with the fight against money corrupting everything and the ways we can achieve redemption for everyone including people outside of this country. An interesting story to read and one which I believe pale in comparison with his other books.
