#thesexlivesofcannibals is by far the #worstbook I’ve read in a very long time. It’s literally what I would call the #worstbookofalltimes . Where to start? #jmaartentroost manages to ascertain his lack of any cultural awareness, expose his mediocre writing style and crowd it all with a sense of humor which I can only categorize as obnoxious, tasteless and just rude. Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t already expecting much from this book if you consider just the title. However we should give #troost credit for shattering any low expectations possible and just take a bad idea and make it worse, take a bad idea and make a book out of it. There is an omnipresent feeling in the text that the writer made it his goal to be gratuitously pernicious and malignant. At the end, it all comes out as childish and arrogant. This book is not only an #affront to #kiribaticulture and #pacificislandsspecifically, it’s also an insult to literature in general. There are so many intelligent and articulate ways to be sarcastic, controversial and even problematic when writing about traveling or living abroad an expat. This book here is simply the perfect example on how NOT to write about your own experience as an #expat . Also the fact that #broadwaybooks and #doubledays would publish this pretentious and meaningless diatribe blows my mind away. I chose to post it anyway because the fact is that I don’t like everything I read and as a librarian myself I don’t believe in censorship. I believe in exposing people to information (annotated sometimes!), and formulating their own conclusions. My conclusion will be to keep track of this book as the worst thing I’ve read in ages. #wouldlikemymoneyback #tarawa#obnoxious #whatnottoread #tasteless#goreadsomethingelse #kiribatirocks#pretentious #caniunreadthisplease
