In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting much from this book at all. Then after a hundred pages read, #theshippingnews took hold of me unexpectedly. It’s not the kind of story I usually like and the characters aren’t particularly “likable”. My sole hint of an explanation comes from #proulx ‘s writing style. #annieproulx masterfully marries her sensible and imperfect point of view of #Quoyle to the harsh and raw landscape of #newfoundland . As much as the setting where it takes places, this book is beautiful and inhospitable. The writing style will keep you enticed and interested enough to follow Quoyle’s path to #return and #redemption . At the same time, the story takes crude twists as it develops in a threatening and unwelcoming environment. Beautiful but inhospitable is definitely the overall theme of the following 4-5 books. #recommended #pulitzerprize #scribner #acribnerbooks #eannieproulx #pulitzerprizewinner #secondchances #coves #againandagain #journalist #goingbacktomyroots #inhospitable #atmospheric
