The tale of aypi by AK Welsapar

You are going to think I’m biased. But I have only read two books set in #turkmenistan in the last two years and they were both written by #akwelsapar . #welsapar is prolific, incisive and wondrous. He is also declared an #enemyofthestate in his native country, all his books are currently banned in Turkmenistan and he lives in #sweden as a #politicalrefugee . #thetaleofaypi as well as his #shortstories are the unequivocal proof of the power of #literature to bear witness and stand up when imposed silences and vanishing memories are the rule. I can’t thank enough #glagoslavpublications for translating and publishing his books to an even much wider audience. The #caspiansea and its #fishermen are the main characters in this deceivingly simple tale. What would it take for you to stand up and say enough? What if our myths and beliefs hold the key to win our battles and ultimately survival? What if our traditions instead of imprisoning us, they had a way of providing a way to redemption? I’m planning to have a reading month of only #bannedbooks next year and of course Sir Welpasar will be included. #recommended #turkmen #Ashgabat#turkmenbashi #sovietrepublic#environmentaldisaster#turkmenliterature #traditions#englishpenaward #penaward
