In my ambition to read books outside of my usual comfort zone, someone recommended #mulaisho as well as other #zambian writers. Here with #thetongueofthedumb Mulaisho gives us a very clean example of THE #postcolonial#african novella depicting the local communities holding on to their #traditions versus a local #elite imposing new models and “progress” right after the #colonizers are gone. At times it feels dated but that’s just because there’s more of a political dilemma here than an introspection. This book came out in 1971 and the story takes place in the final years of the #federationofrhodesiaandnyasalandDespite other magnificent books that come out afterwards, Mulaisho still should get some credit for creating very complex and at times conflicted characters which decide to stand up for what they think it’s right even if that means going against their own communities. Unless you are interested in Zambian or #Malawi history, this book might not resonate with you. I’m personally glad I have read it mostly because of the #anthropological and #historical feeling in the story. #dominicmulaisho #rhodesia#rhodesian #nyasaland #zambianliterature#lusaka #africanwriterseries #heinemann#chief
