I’m very conflicted with #theventriloquiststale by #paulinemelville . On the one hand, her deep observations as well as the remote geographical location make this read a unique and exhilarating experience. However, the superfluous chapter structure and the predictable plot tame any great potential here. In my experience, finding books either from #guyanese writers or set in #guyana is always quite challenging. #melville wonderfully fills up that gap with a story set pretty much in most of the country between #Georgetown and #rupununi with even an interlude in #montreal . The setting and Melville’s intricate and kaleidoscopic writing style really achieves some greatness at times. Again I couldn’t help to notice that all that same greatness feels trapped in a labyrinth made of unnecessarily complicated structures and weak drama.
