Without a doubt another strong contender for my #bestbookofthemonth ! Our self-imposed exiles and the impossibility of any return whatsoever take center stage in #thewomenoftijucopapo by #marilenefelinto . #felinto thrives in captivating the essence of all of our contradictions by writing in a deceivingly simple style. The story is constructed with short sentences written in simple grammar which basically repeat each other. As a reader, this all sounds to me as existential angst which echoes perfectly another #brazilian who also grew up in the streets of #recife : #claricelispector . Both writers have a way with internal #monologues which fight against each, gang up on each other, make peace with each other, and start the same cycle all over again. Felinto’s writing style also reminded me of #gertrudestein and her #threelives . Much like Stein, Felinto masterfully uses direct and simple grammar to reinforce a feeling of despair and helplessness. #highlyrecommended#brazilianliterature #brazilianweek#universityofnebraskapress#braziliannortheast #sertão#pernambuco #bisonbook#asmulheresdetijucopapo#againstallodds
