I love the diversity and fearless world of an #universitypress . Without them, we just wouldn’t have access to some many stories which will never get published by the more commercial publishers. #threeswahiliwomen by #margaretstrobel is the perfect example of that. #strobel spent years living, mingling, observing and documenting the lives of three #swahiliwomenin #Mombasa . The result is the well-researched and intricate account offered in this tiny book. This is an #academic endeavor first and foremost. Therefore I think it’s bound to disappoint a few readers expecting more storytelling and less #research analysis. If you don’t mind the academic jargon and seemingly dry exposé of data and facts, then this might be a good read for you. I found it fascinating and insightful. It was definitely a welcoming break for me after reading one overly emotional read after another. Strobel’s analytic style together with the #joiedevivreexuded in the #swahiliculture somehow works splendidly together. #recommended#indianauniversitypress#wanawakewaswahikiwatatuwamombasa#kenyanwomen #britishcolonialism #freeborn#thesis #socialclasses #twelvetribes
