When he was free and young and he used to wear silks by Austin Clarke

Book set in Toronto, Canada (mostly!). Reviewed on 2020/11: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHSudNLgwnJ/

#austinclarke is a treasure. I can’t believe I hadn’t read him before. #whenhewasfreeandyoungandheusedtowearsilks is a collection of the here and the there, #belonging and not belonging and all the places in between. Back and forth from #barbados to #canada , #clarke takes #identity and its moving definitions to another level, one #shortstory / #novella at a time. I particularly enjoyed #whathappened and #leavingtheislandplace . Similar to my last post with #yanique , Clarke is writing solely from and about an experience he lived and knows too well. He’s not trying to explain anything to the reader and make us understand. The idea is to make us feel and perhaps show us the clear path towards confusion and salvation. #highlyrecommended#toronto#bridgetown#canlit#canadianliterature#caribbeancanada#anansi#immigrantsincanada#rinaldowalcott
